Creating comfortable, attractive, and livable spaces in which people live and work is an extremely important aspect of society. Because so much time is spent indoors, interior designers are more in demand than ever. They are relied upon for knowledge in materials, products, textures, colors, lighting, electric codes, and health and safety requirements, and they are called upon to employ that knowledge in the creation of aesthetically-pleasing spaces for both home and work environments.

Interior designers must have savvy business skills coupled with high creative, imaginative ability. They must be good communicators who can work with clients, architects, builders, and artists. They must be able to both plan a space and communicate it visually with clients and others.

In 2002, there were more than 60,000 interior designers working in the United States, earning a median salary of $41,470, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . To become an interior designer, one must graduate from an accredited program (the Foundation for Interior Design Education and Research accredits programs in interior design), and accumulate work experience before sitting for the National Council of Interior Design Qualifications exam. NCIDQ maintains a strict set of standards that must be met before one can take the exam; one way to gain the experience NCIDQ is looking for is to participate in the Interior Design Experience Program, which NCIDQ administers. Once a designer passes the exam, they are eligible to be registered or licensed in the state they wish to practice.
